Ingredients
  

For the Meat Sauce
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage optional
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar optional
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Ricotta Cheese Layer
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Lasagna Layers
  • 9 –12 lasagna noodles cooked or oven-ready
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
  2. Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions if needed
  3. In a large skillet cook ground beef and sausage until browned
  4. Add chopped onion and garlic and sauté until fragrant
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper
  6. Simmer the sauce for about 10–15 minutes until slightly thickened
  7. In a separate bowl combine ricotta cheese, egg, parmesan, parsley, garlic powder, and salt
  8. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a baking dish
  9. Add a layer of lasagna noodles
  10. Spread ricotta mixture over the noodles
  11. Add meat sauce and sprinkle mozzarella cheese
  12. Repeat the layers until ingredients are used
  13. Finish with mozzarella and parmesan on top
  14. Cover with foil and bake for about 25 minutes
  15. Remove foil and bake another 10–15 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden
  16. Let lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing
